Grit Bins & Salt Storage

A grit bin gives you a supply of salt on site before you need it, which is the whole point. Once the temperature drops, salt sells out and deliveries slow down, so the sites that stay open in January are the ones that filled a bin in October. Keeping salt in a sealed bin also keeps it usable. Salt left in bags or heaped under a sheet absorbs moisture, cakes solid and will not spread.

Our grit bins have a watertight lockable lid, so the contents stay dry and only the people who should be taking grit are taking it. That matters most for councils, schools and business parks, where an unsecured bin gets emptied by passers-by long before the cold snap it was bought for.

Both sizes are moulded from MDPE, which does not rust, rot or corrode the way a metal bin will after a few winters of salt contact. They stack for out-of-season storage and have fork pockets moulded into the base, so a full bin can be moved by forklift or pallet truck rather than shovelled out and refilled in a new spot.

The 200 litre grit bin is the right choice for a domestic driveway, a single building entrance, a small car park or a yard gate. It is the size most street-level and small business salt bins are, it is light enough to position by hand when empty, and it holds enough salt to cover a typical entrance through a full cold spell without a refill.

The 350 litre grit bin is for the sites that run out. Multi-bay car parks, industrial estates, long access roads, school grounds and anywhere a caretaker or facilities team is gritting the same route two or three times a day. The extra capacity means fewer refill trips in exactly the weather that makes refill trips difficult.

If you are covering a large site, two 200 litre bins positioned at either end will usually beat one 350 litre bin in the middle, because the walk with a loaded scoop is what people actually stop doing. Both sizes come in yellow, green and recycled black, so you can colour-code by location or keep the bin visually out of the way.

Brown grit salt is the standard choice for outdoor gritting. It is rock salt with the natural marl and grit left in, and that insoluble content is what gives tyres and boots something to bite on once the ice has melted. It is what most councils spread and it is the right fill for car parks, access roads and yards.

White de-icing salt is the same salt with the marl washed out. It melts ice just as effectively but leaves far less residue, so it is the better choice anywhere the mess gets walked indoors: shop entrances, reception areas, hotel forecourts and paved areas where brown staining would be noticed.

As a rough planning figure, most sites want enough salt held on site to cover two full grits of their route before they need a delivery, which is why the bin is worth filling in autumn rather than in the first frost.
